How To Buy Loose Gemstones

Gemstones are undeniably some of the best and most beautiful treasures our wonderful Earth has given us. Many people collect loose gemstones, but few realize how important it is to have a little knowledge of what to look for when shopping. With so many different types of stones to choose from, like emeralds, sapphires, or even newly popular stones such as tanzanite Aquamarin gemstones, it is very important to do some research before you jump in and buy. Read on to see what you should know.

Quality Really Counts With Loose Gemstones

Before you set foot into a store to buy gemstones, you need to know about the 4 C’s: color, cut, clarity, and carat. You need to know what they mean, and how to evaluate a stone using the 4 C’s. Of course, we all realize that generally speaking, the larger the stone, the more we will pay. But there is much more to it than that. High quality stones that are small will usually be more valuable in the long run than a large, lower quality stone.

When rating natural loose gemstones, color is generally considered to be the most important factor. They should not be muted or “watered down looking”. They should be bright and vivid, with a medium hue that is saturated with color. Always check the color of gemstones in varying types of light. They will look different in daylight than in the bright store lighting. The next most important rating factor for colored gems is clarity. It is very rare to find a natural stone that doesn’t have any flaws, or inclusions in them. The fewer they have, and especially if they are not visible to the naked eye, the more valuable the stone will be. A flawless emerald, for instance, can cost tens of thousands of dollars! The cut of a gemstone is also very important to consider, because a stone that has not been cut very well will tend to look darker because it isn’t reflecting very much light. Different cuts generally won’t add or subtract from the value of a loose gemstone, but can add or subtract from the overall look and beauty of it. Carat weight is the way gemstone size is measured. One carat weighs 1/5 of a gram. Because of the different mass of each type of gemstone, one carat will be a different actual size for each type of stone. So remember, a 1/2 carat diamond will not be the same size as a one carat emerald, or a one carat aquamarine.

Be Selective When You Choose Your Loose Gemstone Dealer!

Always ask a lot of questions before you buy, and if your jeweler or dealer can’t answer basic questions, or won’t show you an appraisal or certificate for the gemstone, run, do not walk! If you can, buy a gemstone that you have seen with your own eyes. Ask to see different qualities of the same stone, so you can see the difference between them. When you are told something like “I’ll sell you this valuable stone for 1/10th of what it’s really worth, don’t believe it. You get what you pay for, always remember!

You can ensure that you will be getting a high quality, valuable gemstone when you shop if you will remember the “Four C’s” of colored gemstones: Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Understanding those concepts will give you the ability to talk to you jeweler and ask questions intelligently. When you shop for copper bracelets or costume jewelry, you don’t necessarily need to worry as much about the 4 C’s, but it is important when you shop for fine gemstones.
